Service User Voice Event: 4th March 2020 #MatVoices2020

“The sum of the expertise of the people in the audience is greater than the sum of expertise of the people on stage” David Winer

Lisa Ramsey, Service User Voice Policy Manager, Maternity Transformation Programme, NHS England & Improvement with Hannah Lynes, Chair of National Maternity Voices

National Maternity Voices and NHS England and Improvement co-hosted a dynamic learning and planning event for all service users involved in improving maternity services in England. It took place on Wednesday 4th March 2020 at The Principle Hotel, Manchester at the same time and in the same venue as the first Chief Midwifery Officers Summit on the day before the Better Births 4 Years On event.

The event was facilitated using open-space technology  and followed an “unconference” format. This meant:

  • The agenda was set by the participants on the day.
  • All participants were encouraged to bring ideas for sessions that they’d like to facilitate or co-facilitate.
  • Participants were able to select the sessions they most wanted to join throughout the day.
  • Some sessions focused on learning new skills, whilst others addressed understanding policy or planning action.

Sessions Agenda

Agenda
Our co-created agenda is displayed on the wall

At the start of the day we had twenty-four, 50 minute sessions to fill. Anyone who wanted had 30 seconds to pitch a session to the room. The pitches were allocated to sessions and after 45 minutes we had an agenda for the rest of the day. The agenda was shared on the wall and online in a Google Document. As each session took place, notes were created either on paper and photographed, or digitally and saved in a separate Google Document for each session.

The agenda, with session titles and facilitators, is shown below. Click on the Google Docs icon Session Notes next to the session time to view notes from that session.
